The Shallow Shaft is Alta’s only independent restaurant, meaning that is not connected to the Alta Ski Area or one of the Lodges in the town. Their claim to fame comes from their amazing food, expansive wine list and dedicated staff. We recently had the opportunity to attend a private event at the Shallow Shaft and sit down with Andy, the General Manager and through these two experiences we enjoyed wonderful food, wine and conversation!

Chef, Kurtis Krause, serves food that is adventurous yet comforting, eclectic and regional. By incorporating innovative world flavors from Asia his food is beautiful and savory. Coming from a German background informs his cuisine and he uses local, premium ingredients, making his food from scratch. You don’t want to miss out on his amazing cuisine this season!

They offer special wine and beer pairing dinners throughout the season and in 2011 the Shallow Shaft awarded best wine menu in the state of Utah by Salt Lake Magazine. Chef Krause gets creative with his pairing dinners with menus made specifically for the wines or beers being served without crossover with the nightly menu. So, when you attend a wine or beer pairing dinner you will be served a whole new menu that you have note experienced, even if you’ve enjoyed a meal at the Shallow Shaft. Checkout our events page to see the special pairings they are offering this season.

The Shallow Shaft has a unique and interesting history in Alta; it started off as a ski shop in the 1960’s then turned into a pizza place and now offers fine dining with New York style pizza’s (to go only).

Overall what makes the Shallow Shaft successful is their wonderful staff who continues coming back season after season, expansive wine selection and amazing food! All of these components are very important in the guest experience and you’ll be happy you enjoyed dinner here in the 2015 ski season!
