Tons of Snow at Alta Snowbird

Two weeks into 2017 and snowfall amounts are looking good. The holiday crowds have gone for the moment, leaving the mountains congestion free. Well, perhaps congestion preferable is more accurate, at least during weekdays.

This week Little Cottonwood got several feet in as many days. Canyon blog managed to score first trams at Snowbird through subterfuge Tuesday and yesterday. First tracks on upper and lower Cirque and shouts of ‘woo hoo!’ from across the mountain were common. After a brief closure for continued avalanche control Peruvian reopened and your correspondent was rewarded with an entire slope to himself below Gun Towers. The crowds were such that he managed to get up Peruvian lift and return to the same slope to record second tracks. Ha!

At Alta, Supreme and much of the steeper terrain were closed the past few days. Same with Mineral Basin. But by the time readers of this space, all seven of you, finish reading this post, the full mountain at both resorts will be available, the skies clear, and the temps just right.

Until next storm…

Skier on the slopes.
